Anyone have links to or pics of various grade examples? I’m finding a lot of variation in what’s considered a 9 and would like a few examples to form a baseline for comparison against.
Additionally, what are the qualifiers/disqualifiers (in general) for a 9? I’ve seen cards with basically only OC issues get a 9 (everything else about it was arguably perfect), yet another that is centered with a decent amount of surface wear and silvering along the edges get the same grade. How does that make sense? I’d think the second card would at best be an 8. Just trying to find some consistency here.

I think minor silvering doesn't affect the grade. I have psa 10s that have really minor silvering. As for centering, I think a well centered card(with minor surface wear and silvering) can have the same or better eye appeal than a OC card(perfect in other areas). Hence both the cards can get a psa 9,its all about the eye appeal. That being said, there's a huge range in psa 9. Sometimes its difficult to tell the difference between 10/9 or 9/8. Maybe someone else can share their opinions on the grading standards?

PSA 10 are usually very solid. Within 60 40 centering on the front (though back can be quite off centered but doesn't matter). PSA 10 doesn't necessarily mean flawless/pristine though. Often they allow a tiny imperfection, usually if its on the back (light scratch/wax stain, dot of edgewear or "micro" edgewear).
PSA 9 range way more. If the centering is not within 60 40 but is an otherwise perfect card, it could still get a 9. Sometimes you'll see a PSA 10 with good centering but micro wear on the back, and a perfect PSA 9 but with off centering. If a card is perfectly centered but has some minor visible wear on the back, it could also get a 9. As I said, theres a decent range for 9s.
PSA 8's are usually more clear and less of a range than PSA 9 from my experience. If the card is borderline OC grade and super off centered, that sometimes is enough to drop to an 8. Otherwise, obvious edge wear, corner wear, scratches (especially on the holo), tiny dents, etc will drop to 8 or under. Large "binder dents" will always drop to a 6 though.

Do PSA 9s allow for scratching on the back? Yup you can have light scratches on the back and still get a 9. A few light scratches may still even get a 10 if all else is good. However, these scratches shouldn’t be scratches you get from constantly taking cards in and out of sleeves (where the entire back is covered in scratches from use, that would drop to an 8 or under if scratches are deep)
