I have watched a few yugiohtube videos in recent times and taken a bit of interest in the current state of yugioh.
I notice discussions around the place about 1st Edition 1st print and 2nd print. Most people describe the 1st print cards as wavy print.
I would describe them myself as having a slightly textured look. (not so glossy) Silver embossed rares and gold embossed ultra titles were pressed lower in the title box.
I don't see anyone ever explaining why there were 2 1st Edition print runs so thought this would be a good place to talk about this.
March 8th 2002 Yugioh was released in English in North America and Canada. Starter decks SDK and SDY were released along with Legend of the Blue eyes white dragon booster.
The game was so popular and everyone wanted to play from young children through to adults.
The 1st Edition 1st print LOB disappeared within a short time into private hands most ending up in playing decks of children usually without sleeves at this stage so the cards suffered playwear fast.
It was then realised that demand far outweighed supply and it was decided to print more 1st Edition cards to keep up with demand so the 2nd print 1st Edition followed. By this time early collectors and players
were paying 40-50 to get that hard to get ultra or secret to complete sets and decks and this early value made people want to protect their cards so along came ultra pro yugioh sized card sleeves and early players
could try and protect their cards from less wear and tear. Unfortunately for many of the 1st Edition 1st print cards they weren't protected and it was early days to put any collectable value on the cards.
I have noticed there is no real differentiating between LOB 1st Edition prints 1 or 2 when it comes to price guides and grading but the LOB 1st Edition 1st print cards in pristine condition would be much rarer and harder to find
than the 2nd print cards. I tend to think a 1st Edition 1st print which I believe you would struggle to find a PSA10 as printing of the early cards wasn't the best straight out the pack (off centre and printing blemishes were common) and as stated above the largest portion were played and poorly protected and would have to be far rarer and valuable than the 2nd print that followed. I would think a PSA 8 1st print would be probably rarer than a PSA 10 2nd print as the printing quality was improved in the 2nd print cards but that is just my opinion but with fair reasoning to support that.
It would be interesting to hear other opinions.
Anyway look forward to adding more discussions.
I am in Australia. I used to read a bit of Shonen Jump in the early days before yugioh was released in 2002 and used to read it in Shonen Jump. I started collecting in Australia in 2002. We didn't get the US/Canada 1st Editions in Australia and pretty much started on LOB-A 1st Edition and US/Canada Unlimited. Before long I started buying boxes and singles from the U.S. through a friend I had in North Carolina and ebay and started trading in singles on ebay australia. Over the next few years I sold thousands of higher end cards for little money compared to the PSA BGS priced cards today. By the time I had collected the 11th booster set countless promos TP sets 1 to 4 I started to think there was no end and there were just too many cards getting released too fast and popularity and prices were falling so I just stopped collecting. I wasnt alone. In 2007 I sold off a few sets of cards and some of my better singles for a small profit but I hung onto the first 9 booster sets as well as quite a few singles as I probably invested more than I would have got return. In 2007 I packed away what yugioh I had into a box and it didn't see the light of day until a few months ago when I was reading an article about some early yugioh cards being worth good money. 11 or so years back the bottom had fallen out and the cards weren't fetching the $$$$ of the earlier days. In 2007 I sold my complete set of IOC 1st Edition mint for $400 and my TP set 1 2 3 for $1000 and a complete SOI 1st Edition for $200. Kick myself today lol. PSA or BGS grading was never a thing back then. Cards were either mint / near mint or any problems were listed. Anyway I knew I still had a few good cards stored away that I was surprised to see the value of today. I went to Indy Gencon in 2003 and whilst there I picked up a handful of LOB 1st Edition cards. I knew back then about the 1st / 2nd print cards and being in Australia I had mostly unlimited set in LOB but wanted to try and upgrade some cards to 1st Edition U.S. cards as comparing to other TCG like Magic or Pokemon those early cards would be the ones to own. My friend in NC had been telling me a 1st Edition Blue eyes white dragon in m/nm condition was hard to find. I have seen quite a few over the years and everyone has been played or something slightly wrong. I managed to find a 1st ed 1st print LOB-001 at indy gencon in 2003. Its the only mint / near mint 1st print I came across in many years and it was a hard card to find back then when they were still around. I had a handful of m/nm 2nd prints whilst selling singles in the early days but only ever seen 1 m/nm 1st print I grabbed at Gencon 03. Turns out I ended up hanging on to some good cards. My collection is 15-17 years old now but always been stored in Ultra Pro albums with sleeves and never played with. Most cards I own are straight from pack mint and still as good as the day I put them in their albums. I would love to grade them but sending them to BGS or PSA from Australia makes me nervous about something going wrong and not seeing them again.
