Every time I wrack my brain about PGD I find that it's undervalued.
I saw a lot of sealed 36 boxes sell between 2015 and 2018 for about $160 and less for the 24s. Recently the boxes have floated up to about $300-ish which is crazy to me because you can't pull anything out of that box totaling close to that. There are so few cards in the set worth over $40 raw. Most ultras are under that by half. So unless you're grading cards the set really isn't even worth opening for. Even if you do grade the cards they still aren't worth much over $100 in many instances.
Question - $80 Rope of Life -$120? Very low pop. Don Zaloog - maybe the best card in the set (saw the most play in standard tournaments) Fuschio Richie - $150? (I bought mine for $45) Guardian Sphinx - $90? Great Dezard - $80? Byser Shock - $80? Helpoemer - $120? Mystical Knight of Jackal - $175? Nightmare Wheel - $200? Extremely low pop
All this said... PGD has unrecognized centering problems like the set that precedes it. Many of the packs that I have opened had centering problems on holos. Typically top to bottom centering vs LOD which tends to be right to left centering. So even if you did open a box you'd have to hope that you are pulling well centered cards...
Pricing these for PSA was hard because there aren't a lot of public records and I don't really know what the market can sustain for these cards. It's not really a sought after set and sits in the background for now. It was a very useful set that had tons of application and holds nostalgic value for many people who played in 2003 but has no relevance now. So is this set a sleeper? Hard to say. I think that as the years drag on all of those boxes that were sold in 2015-2017 will slowly be opened and if those cards aren't graded or protected well the owners risk damage. That will further hurt the future population of this set and it may see low pops on GM for years to come.

I agree with you that opening a box does not make sense, unless you let the cards grade. But the chances of off centered cards are pretty high. I would set the prices for the Ultras like this: Question - $80 Rope of Life - $120-150 Don Zaloog - $100-120 Fushioh Richie - $120-150 Guardian Sphinx - $100-120 Great Dezard - $80-100 Byser Shock - $70-90 Helpoemer - $120-150 (cover card) Mystical Knight - $150 Nightmare Wheel - $130-160
My price proposals are not so different from yours.
Should the set become more popular, more cards will come to PSA and the population will increase, especially the super rares. But due to the centering problems, many cards will only get a 9 and people will not dare to open new boxes because the chance of losing money is high.

Just want to throw out there that the seller wowlootsellers on ebay has 20 1st ed 36 pack PGD boxes available on his store for $399 each. So in the very least there doesn't seem to be a shortage in supply of affordable boxes of this set for the time being. But what was stated so far does make sense, there's just not much desirability for the particular chase cards of this set, and every notable card I've pulled from these packs has been obscenely OC (looking at my 75/25 rope of life here.) Most people, myself included, probably aren't willing to risk it for the biscuit. But with that being said if you have an extra 300 bucks to burn this set would be fun just to open on the cheap because God knows there aren't any more vintage 1st ed YGO box breaks you can do for this price.

Wow! I do love the visual pop reports! I don't believe we will see a spike in these given the massive QTY of sealed boxes on the market, IMO. The fact that people know how many sealed boxes there are out there (at a relatively affordable price) should keep single prices down for quite a while. A rise would strictly be driven by set collectors, as many of the holos in this set don't necessarily scream "attractive" to the commonfolk PSA YGO collector.

He likely has more than that. He was selling those 36s for 180 each in 2016. The problem still remains. I'd rather burn $400 completing more holo sets. I mean fuck I just bought a Magical Arm Shield for 130. Hoping I can grade it a 10!

When shit is available people think differently about prices. I purchased a bunch of pack fresh holos from 416 for about $600. It was a lot of holos. All mint. Some OC but most gradeable. Two sasuke samurais. Very excited about those. The Zaloog I just graded came back a 10. Very excited to grade an entire holo set.
